The Utah 5, Day 2: Capital Reef National Park

August 20, 2024

Day two of my sprint through Utah’s natural wonders began just after sunrise, as I departed Torrey to head into Capital Reef National Park. “Into” was a bit optimistic as the scenic drive, the only road accessible to normal cars, was closed for construction. Thus, I skirted along the northern edge, but still enjoyed a couple beautiful stops.

First up, was a quick stop at Panorama Point, a nice scenic view along the highway between Torrey and Fruita.

7AM being too early to stop at the visitor center for my normal souvenirs, I continued down the road to Fruita, to take advantage of the beautiful morning light at the Fruita Barn.

After a stop at the visitor center, I continued east on Hwy 24 and made a stop to hike the Hickman Natural Bridge trail. As the name might suggest, this marked a return to natural rather than man made wonders. I enjoyed a 1.75 mile hike amongst the red rocks and marveled at the bridge.

Capital Reef did not show me much, but it was enough to want to come back when the scenic drive is open and perhaps with a Jeep!
