Exploring Iceland’s Breathtaking Waterfalls on Day 2

Day 2 (May 15): Waterfalls being the main theme of the trip, we returned to Gullfoss for a morning shoot.

We then made our way to the Brúará Trail in the morning. 4.06 miles of hiking with 453′ of climb led us to three falls: Hlauptungufoss, Miðfoss, and Brúarfoss.

With our memory cards now storing many more photos of the falls, we ventured forth to Seljalandsfoss and what we thought was Gljúfrabúi, another waterfall.

Upon leaving, we figured out the second falls we shot was not Gljúfrabúi as it was another half kilometer up the trail. We thought we might be able to drive to it (as we were on the road when we realized it), but that was not to be. When we realized this, we were at a point in the road where it was hard to turn around, so we kept driving up the gravel road into the mountains. The sights were beautiful, so we kept going, and found Nihinaganfoss, an unexpected thrill.

We then continued up the road as far as I was comfortable taking a rental with no recovery gear. Back down the mountain, we returned to our original parking spot, hiked past Seljalandsfoss to Gljúfrabúi.

We enjoyed this bonus roadside waterfall along our way to camp.

A cascading waterfall on a green rocky cliff under a clear blue sky.

Our day of waterfalling ended with setting up our tents at the Skógar Campsite near the base of Skógafoss, where we slept to the sounds of the 197′ waterfall.
